Recreating history at a storied university

We recreated and installed 240 windows and three sets of custom doors to modernize a building constructed in 1875 while maintaining its historic integrity.

Vanderbilt University’s iconic Kirkland Hall was originally built in 1875 and its windows and doors had not been replaced since 1906. To ensure this building would remain structurally sound and be energy efficient for decades to come, Vanderbilt University trusted Trade31 to recreate and install 240 historic windows and three sets of custom doors with exacting precision.

Historic replicas that meet modern standards

Recreating the new windows required a combination of traditional and modern methods and materials, as well as the quality craftsmanship and attention to detail Trade31 brings to every project. We created 19 custom templates for each of the building’s windows, which were then customized to fit on site. Because each window had a different trim and were curved rather than square or rectangular, we had to be diligent about measurements, cutting, and transportation to ensure flawless installation. We leveraged modern glazing and insulation methods to update the efficiency of the windows while still maintaining the original look and construction. The result is a beautiful historic replica that meets modern LEED Gold standards and exceeded our client’s expectations.
